Summer Stephan Announces Candidacy for District Attorney
Endorsed by Deputy DA’s and San Diegans Against Crime
(San Diego, Calif.) – Summer Stephan, Chief Deputy District Attorney since 2012 and a 27-year veteran of the District Attorney’s Office, has announced her candidacy for District Attorney. Stephan is recognized as a national leader and expert in protecting the community against sex offenders and combatting human trafficking.
“It has been a great privilege in my life to serve in the DA’s office these last 27 years,” said Ms. Stephan. “I care deeply about our community and protecting our citizens. Fighting for justice for victims of crime, being the voice for the vulnerable and the voiceless, and faithfully abiding by the principles of justice and integrity are what has driven me and will continue to drive me in safeguarding my community. I stand ready with strength forged in years of experience fighting for justice and public safety to lead the office as District Attorney.”
Tuesday, the Deputy District Attorney’s Association and their PAC, San Diegans Against Crime, endorsed Stephan to succeed incumbent Bonnie Dumanis, who announced that she would not run for a fifth term in 2018.
“The San Diego Deputy District Attorneys Association endorses with great pride Chief Deputy District Attorney Summer Stephan to become the next District Attorney for San Diego County in 2018,” said Steve Walter, president of the San Diego County District Attorneys Association. “For 27 years Ms. Stephan has dedicated herself to doing justice by compassionately assisting crime victims, holding accountable those who commit crimes, and finding ways prosecutors can better serve our diverse community. After many years as a tough as nails trial prosecutor, she is also a well-respected and effective leader within our office and beyond.”
“We firmly believe Summer Stephan is an outstanding choice for San Diego’s future District Attorney,” continued Walter.
“Summer Stephan has dedicated her life to seeking justice for victims of crime, first as a line prosecutor where she handled our most serious and difficult cases,” said Jim Koerber, president of San Diegans Against Crime. “Summer continued that commitment as a manager in the District Attorney’s Office, where she demonstrated courage, integrity, honesty and character in a wide variety of assignments. Summer’s fairness, compassion, and breadth of experience make her exceptionally well qualified to serve as our District Attorney.”
In 2016, San Diegans Against Crime awarded Stephan with their Outstanding Commitment to Public Safety Award in recognition of her tireless efforts to protect our community.
“I am so honored by my colleagues with their overwhelming show of support,” said Stephan in accepting the endorsement. “It means so much to me to have their trust and confidence as these are the men and women who have dedicated their lives and careers to making the community safer. They are on the frontlines fighting for justice in our courtrooms every day. I pledge to ensure they have the resources and support necessary to do their jobs effectively. I am proud to serve with them and I will be proud to lead them if I am elected.”
Prior to her appointment as Chief Deputy, Stephan was Chief of the North County Branch and Chief of the Sex Crimes and Human Trafficking Division. As a trial prosecutor, Stephan tried more than 100 jury trials including high profile cases such as the sexual assault and murder of an elderly woman and the school shooting at a local Elementary School. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Davis and her Juris Doctor from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.
